SUMMARY: A Family of Reformed Churches in Africa – Remarkable stories of God’s grace, which appeared in June 2022, is a revised and expanded second edition of the book that was first published in 2015. It tells the stories of the planting, the growth and the current state of an extraordinary family of churches in Africa.
These churches share a joint history and Reformed tradition. All the churches are in some way connected to the Dutch Reformed Church’s missionary endeavour. But the book also specifically recounts the contribution of African evangelists, and the astonishing reception of the gospel in African context. As Andrew Walls stated: “Modern African Christianity is not only the result of [missionary] movements among Africans, but it has been principally sustained by Africans, and is to a surprising extent the result of African initiatives”.
It is eventually the story of God’s grace. This book is a plea for the rediscovery, not only of our shared history and tradition, but especially our joint calling to ministry within our sub-Saharan context with its porous national borders and extraordinary challenges. The book contains several colourful pictures beautifully imaging the diversity within the unity of the body of Christ. The book should be read, and kept as valuable source of information, by church leaders, theological students and all interested and involved members of this remarkable family of churches.
